We are beyond excited to announce Montabi, our debut game, is officially coming to Steam! 🎉 Montabi is a creature-collector roguelike deckbuilder where you build your deck by taming and assembling a team of Montabi. If you love strategic battles and collecting unique creatures, this is a game made for you.
A Fusion of Two Beloved Genres
Montabi combines the thrill of monster-taming games like Pokémon with the strategic deckbuilding of games like Slay the Spire. We wanted to create a game that blends the joy of collecting creatures with the depth of tactical decision-making, ensuring every run feels fresh and exciting.
Beyond gameplay, we also wanted to make Montabi relatable and lovable, creating a world filled with unique Montabi that players can bond with. Our hope is that Montabi will resonate with fans of creature-collecting games and newcomers alike.
The Journey
Let’s take a step back to July 2022—the moment Mankibo officially started. It hasn’t been an easy road. Balancing our dream of working on our own IP while taking on client projects to survive was a constant challenge. We experimented with various ideas, including a brick-breaker roguelike and a Plants vs. Zombies-style roguelike, before we landed on the first iteration of Montabi in 2023.
However, game development is rarely a straight path. After months of testing and validation, we realized that our original Montabi concept wasn’t strong enough. It was a tough decision, but we knew we had to make a major pivot. Instead of forcing something that didn’t work, we restructured the game’s mechanics, refined its core gameplay loop, and strengthened its identity.
That difficult but necessary pivot led us to where we are today: a game that we are truly proud of.
Partnering with Akupara Games
Another exciting part of this journey is that we’re not alone! We are thrilled to announce that Akupara Games has joined us as Montabi’s publisher. Their belief in Montabi and their support have helped shape the game into what it is today. Together, we are working to bring Montabi to life in the best way possible.
This is Just the Beginning
While this is a huge milestone, it’s only the beginning of Montabi’s journey. We are now preparing our first public demo, where players will get their first hands-on experience with Montabi’s world. Our goal is to deliver an amazing creature-collector roguelike deckbuilder that will captivate players for years to come.
